January 2010

The January “campout” was held at Pappadeaux’s Restaurant in Sugar Land, Texas on December 23, 2009.  This was a going-away lunch for James and Wenonah Arthur.  Those present were:  James and Wenonah Arthur, Don and Terry Boldman, Peggy and Earl Capps, Marilynn Eisenberg, Bill and Jacque Frazier, Jay and Janet Henry, Marc and Rita Hopkins, Jack and Marilyn Shields, Galen and Carol Sloan, Claude and Josie Stegall, Bob and Alice Vickers, Claude and Terry Zimmerman, and Terrel and Martha Crumpler.  Marilynn Eisenberg’s daughter, Susie, joined us.

We will really miss James and Wenonah, but know they will have many great experiences in England.  Of course, once they drive on the left side of the road, they may have a bit of trouble keeping their 5th wheel on the right (or proper) side of the road when they get back for good.  We will welcome them with open arms even if we have to teach them to speak “Texas” again.

j0411870Our December campout was held at Coushatte Recreation Ranch on December 10-13, 2009.  We missed those members unable to attend, but we had a very good time.  Mrs. Santa (Peggy Capps) read the poem slow enough for us to follow—at least most of us. I don’t know which was funnier—Oscar Duncan with three left to right pass around gifts in his lap at one time or Bob Vickers licking the top of the insulated cup he got for his exchange gift so no one would take it from him.  Of course, Don’s left to right gift of a plastic penguin that poops jelly beans was a close second.   It’s all in good fun, though.  Needless to say, no one took Bob’s gift.

Wenonah had received the new blue Dogs for the Deaf patches, which indicate we donated more than $500.  You may either replace the red ones on your vest or add the blue patch.  I handed out the patches to those attending the lunch and have the patches for the rest.  If I don’t hand it to you at the next campout you attend, ask me.

As most of you know, we won’t be camping at Rayford Crossing RV Park in the Woodlands in May.  Instead, we are trying a new place near New Braunfels, Jellystone RV Park.  The Eisenbergs stayed there at Thanksgiving and gave it a “thumbs up.”  Also, in September we will be going to Water’s Edge RV Park in Rockport for the Hummingbird Festival.  We went there several years ago and really enjoyed it.

January Birthdays:

            Oscar Duncan – January 13

            Terry Zimmerman – January 13

            Claude Zimmerman – January 31

January Anniversary:

            James & Wenonah Arthur – 33 years

The February campout will be at Magnolia Lake RV Park in Goodrich (near Livingston) February 11-14, 2010.  Take Hwy 59 North to Goodrich.  Turn right on FM 2665.  The park is ¾ mile on the left.  Be sure to call Don at 281-787-7808 to make a reservation if you plan to attend.  The owner will give us a brisket if there are ten rigs attending and you know how we like to eat.

Hope everyone going to the valley has a good and safe trip.  We look forward to seeing you when you return.

   November 2009

Our November campout was held at the Country Place RV Park in Cut and Shoot, Texas, on November 12-15, 2009.  Members attending included:  Don and Terry Boldman, Earl and Peggy Capps, Al and Marilynn Eisenberg, Bill and Jacque Frazier, Herman and Bunni Halle, Jay and Janet Henry, Jack and Gladys McCall, Sam and Lois Samuel, Jack and Marilynn Shields, Galen and Carol Sloan, Claude and Josie Stegall, David Stroud, and Claude and Terry Zimmerman.  Oscar and Peggy Duncan had to leave early because of a family obligation.  Bob Weggemann, Jody Birchett and Marie Broughton visited during the campout and Terrel and Martha Crumpler went out to eat with us on Friday night.  James and Wenonah Arthur, Joe Jackson, and Brian and Alice Barnett, Assistant State Directors, attended our meeting Saturday.  Jeff and Jennifer Hoemberg had a meal with us and visited until early evening, as did James and Wenonah.

j0411870The weather was absolutely beautiful and we took advantage of it by taking walks and sitting outside.  On Saturday night the guys decided to cook steaks outside.  For a spur of the moment plan, everything was wonderful.  We were all so full after the meal,

it was difficult to stay awake to play games.  I saw lots of yawns (mine included).  It’s hard to leave good friends, but we know our next campout is coming up soon.

December Campout - A paper was passed around for those planning to attend the Christmas campout next month to sign up for.  If you signed that paper and your plans change, be sure to call Bill Frazier as soon as you know you are not going.  We will be in the same clubhouse we were in last year.

James and Wenonah will not be attending next month.  They will be in England looking for a place to live.  James has to report for work the first of January.  We will certainly miss them, but know they will have many interesting experiences to share with us.  Anyone who has Skype will be able to keep in touch with them.

Christmas Party - Now, about the Christmas party.  After all the dust settled, the rules of the $10 gift exchange are:  ladies bring a gift wrapped in red paper to be exchanged with ladies and men bring a gift wrapped in green paper to be exchanged with men.  There can be two exchanges only.  At the end of the exchange, after the last person gets a gift, the person who drew #1 and got the first gift may exchange with anyone.  That’s the only exchange allowed at that time.  Remember, this is a fun time.  This is a time for giving.  If you don’t get the gift you really wanted, better luck next year.  Someone will be happy and it might be you.

The pass-around gift should be inexpensive and non-breakable.

Castle Tour - Wenonah has contacted the owner of the castle in Bellville and made arrangements for us to have lunch there and take the tour of the castle.  We are to meet at Newman’s Bakery at 10:30 on Thursday and someone will lead us to the castle, which is about 5 miles from town.  The cost is $12.50 per person and includes the tour and lunch, a drink, and a pastry dessert.  They need a count of the number of people planning to attend so they will know how much food to prepare.  Please let me know definitely at least by Tuesday before the campout if you will be attending so I can let them know.  For those of you who usually come to the campout on Thursday, you will need to plan to get there early on Thursday or come on Wednesday.  It should be fun and interesting.

Craft Project - Carol suggested making a penguin tote bag at the December campout (maybe to carry your eating utensils and plates, etc.).  She will try to get some for around $3.  She has the paint and assures me that they are easy to make.  Right!  We did decorate Christmas shirts last year and they didn’t turn out too bad.

Annual Dues - Don’t forget to send your annual dues ($13 for members and $11 for associate members) to Joe Jackson, 14014 Kathi Lynn Lane, Sugar Land, TX  77478.  The chapter has already sent in 2010 dues for all members to the state since they required it by November 15th.  Those unable to attend the campouts may become associate members.  You will still receive the newsletter and will be welcome any time, but will not be counted against our chapter when percentages are used by the state to determine attendance at the Samborees.

Also, Carol has requested members bring any and all pictures of club members and activities in 2009 to the December campout for the scrapbook.

Sam and Don are going to contact a military organization and find out if there is a needy military family our chapter could donate to through the organization.  The results of that research will be discussed and decided at the December campout.  Our plan is to donate $500 to a needy military family.

Treasurers Report -  For those unable to attend the November campout, Treasurer Joe Jackson gave a report on how much money we made at the Samboree.  Our profit at the Sloppy Joe booth was $911.45, at the Dogs for the Deaf table-$380.00, and the flea market-$145.00, for a total of $1,436.45.  We will donate $960.00 to Dogs for the Deaf and $500.00 to the Bellville Food Bank.

              October 2009

Our October campout was held at the Fall Samboree in Canton, Texas, on October 21-25, 2009.  Members attending included:  Jody Birchett, Don and Terry Boldman, Al and Marilynn Eisenberg, Herman and Bunny Halle, Joe and Dee Jackson, Dodie Schmidt, Sam and Lois Samuel, Jack and Marilynn Shields, Galen and Carol Sloan, David Stroud, and guests, Bob and Alice Vickers for their third visit.

j0411870The Boldmans, Eisenbergs, Samuels, Shields, and Vickers caravanned to Canton on Tuesday and Jody Birchett, the Jacksons, Sloans, and David Stroud were already

there.  The Halles came in on Thursday.  Wednesday night it rained

all night.  When I looked out the window during the night, all I could

see was water—no road, no grass—just moving water.  It was as though we were in the middle of a river.  It was a bit alarming.  The next morning people were looking for their rugs, chairs, and steps, which had floated away.  It finally quit raining, but we were left with lots of mud.  The Samuels decided to move to higher ground and had to be pulled out by tractor.

We all worked so hard during the Samboree and made it a great success for our chapter.  You should have seen the guys work the Sloppy Joe booth.  I think they enjoyed making the sandwiches, wrapping them, and serving the beans.  Maybe it was stirring the beans and Sloppy Joe mixture that they liked.  At any rate, we had quite a system going.  For a prospective member, Bob Vickers really got into the Sloppy Joe booth mode.  He was still manning the booth after the bulk of customers were served.  We served approximately 225 lunches.  We didn’t run out and will have leftovers on Thursday of our next campout.  Please bring a salad, side dish, or dessert to help round out the meal.

Our chapter donation to Dogs for the Deaf was over $900.  Special thanks should go to Rita Hopkins.  She obtained many great donations from pet stores, her veterinarian, and Wal-Mart (to name a few) for the raffle.  The dog blankets (or lap pads) were a great hit.  At Country Place RV Park Joe Jackson will be able to give us an accounting of the money we made and donated.

Speaking of the Jacksons, Dee had a flare-up with her hip and was confined to a wheel chair during the Samboree.  She manned the Dogs for the Deaf booth and the Sloppy Joe sales table.  She should have gone home and received care from her doctor, but she is such a trooper, she didn’t.  Like I said before, everyone worked very hard pitching in where needed.  I rarely saw the Dogs for the Deaf table when Dodie Schmidt and Marilynn Eisenberg weren’t there, along with Carol Sloan.  Marilyn Shields, Alice Vickers, and Don Boldman delivered Sloppy Joe lunches to the vendors.

Terry Zimmerman’s sister passed away in California.  Terry and Zim left their rig at Coushatte and drove to California.  James Arthur had a wreck in his truck prior to the Samboree, plus he had to leave for a temporary work assignment in England on Saturday of the Samboree, so they were unable to attend.  Thieves broke into Mark and Rita Hopkins mobile home (due for a sales closing on October 30th) and stole copper wiring.  Then, Mark’s truck died on him the day before we were due to leave for Canton.  All three couples had planned to attend the Samboree.

The last information I received is that James and Wenonah will be in England in January.  We sure will miss them.  We hope the Vickers can come to our campout in Cut-N-Shoot and, if not, to Coushatte in December.  They need to find out if they were voted into the chapter.  We met a very nice couple, from Clear Lake, who are looking for a chapter to visit and possibly join.  They have been invited to visit us in Cut-N-Shoot in November and/or Coushatte in December.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

November 8 – Debbie Wanless               November 20 – Melva Weggemann

November 18 – Kathleen Burgess           November 25 – Toshi Hamilton

Our next regular campout will be at Country Place RV Park in Cut-N-Shoot on November 12-15, 2009.  Be sure to call Bill Frazier at least a week ahead to make a reservation.  Bill’s number is 936-856-5369 or cell phone 936-524-4360.

              September 2009

Our September campout was held at North Shore RV Park in Onalaska, TX, on September 10-13, 2009.  Members attending included:  James and Wenonah Arthur, Don and Terry Boldman, Earl and Peggy Capps, Oscar and Peggy Duncan, Al and Marilynn Eisenberg, Bill and Jacque Frazier, Herman and Halle Halle, Jay and Janet Henry, Marc and Rita Hopkins, Joe and Dee Jackson, Galen and Carol Sloan, Claude and Josie Stegall, David Stroud, Bob Weggemann, and Claude and Terry Zimmerman.  Bob and Alice Vickers visited us for their second visit.  Terrel and Martha Crumpler drove in to go out to eat with us on Friday afternoon.

j0411870It was very hot when we arrived on Wednesday, but became overcast, drizzly, and a little cooler as the weekend neared.  James recommended we camp at Water’s Edge

RV Park in Rockport in September 2010 for the Hummingbird Festival and return to North Shore in Onalaska in May 2010.  Bill checked with the office at North Shore and found that they are booked for May 2010, so we will make it for May 2011.  Since we already have a reservation at Rayford Crossing for May 2010, we will keep that plan and go to Water’s Edge in Rockport in September 2010 and North Shore in Onalaska in May 2011.  Wenonah will probably distribute the new schedules at the November campout.

You’ve never seen the Cool Sams members work as hard as we did during this campout.  There were people using sewing machines, people sewing with needle and thread, people using hot glue guns, and people cutting material.  A lot of the guys tried keeping a low profile so they wouldn’t be recruited to work.  After all, they had to discuss the “issues of the world.”  But, Al did himself proud by making a big sign for our Dogs for the Deaf table.  He painted pictures of dogs on flowerpots for our “wind chimes.”  Thanks so much Al.  We did find time to play some games.  Just a hint:  Don’t play Hand and Foot without shuffling the cards after the last campout.

We did vote to increase our donation to Dogs for the Deaf to $500 plus the proceeds from our Dogs for the Deaf table.

Some important dates you may want to keep in mind are the Fall Samboree in Canton on October 22-25, 2009; the 2010 Spring Samboree in Waco on April 1-4, 2010; and the 2010 Fall Samboree in Abilene on October 21-24, 2010.  Next year’s national rally will be in Louisville, Kentucky in July 2010.  The next mini-rally at Coushatte will be March 4-7, 2010.

Fall Samboree

So far the Arthurs, Boldmans, Eisenbergs, Hopkins, Jacksons, Samuels, Shields, Sloans, Stroud, Zimmermans, and our guests, the Vickers, are planning to attend the Fall Samboree in Canton.  These folks will be handling the Sloppy Joe booth, the raffle table, the flea market, and the Dogs for the Deaf table.  If anybody else can attend, you are welcome to join us.  Remember you can register when you get there or on line at http://www.texasgoodsam.com/.  Directions to park at the Samboree:  All RV rigs are to come off Hwy. 64 onto FM 859 and enter the grounds from FM 859.  No rig will be allowed to enter from any highway other than FM 859.

October Birthdays:

October 1 – Jay Henry             October 16 – Dodie Schmidt

October 19 – Joe Jackson

October Anniversary:  October 19 - Joe and Dee Jackson – 36 years

Our next regular campout will be at Country Place RV Park in Cut-N-Shoot on November 12-15, 2009.  Be sure to call Bill Frazier at least a week ahead to make a reservation.  With the economy the way it is, more people are camping closer to home and we need to be sure we have enough spaces reserved for our group.  Bill’s number is 936-856-5369 or cell phone 936-524-4360.

Since the State needs to know the new officers for 2010 now, we had to hold the election in September, rather than wait until November.  The new officers will be David Stroud, President, Terry Boldman, Secretary, and Don Boldman, Wagonmaster.  Galen Sloan, Vice President, and Joe Jackson, Treasurer, will remain in office since their terms do not expire until next year.  Al Eisenberg will serve as Assistant Wagonmaster.

Member News:  The Zimmermans are off to California to spend some time with Terry’s ill sister, Jo King.  Joe and Dee Jackson are back on the Samboree circuit (in Arkansas) after attending the funeral of Joe’s grandson.  We have just learned that Toshi Hamilton is now receiving Hospice care at home.  Our thoughts and prayers are with them all.

Please check your member roster for the expiration date of your Good Sam membership and let me or Wenonah know of any changes and updates.

Hope you have enough rain if you need it, good health for everyone, and we will see you in Canton and/or Cut-N-Shoot.  For those who’ve been asked, don’t forget to make the Sloppy Joes before you go to Canton and don’t forget to bring it with you!

August 2009

Hope everyone has had a great summer so far.  We certainly had a great day on July 17th when many of us visited the Houston Holocaust Museum, Pappas Barbecue Restaurant, and the Ronald McDonald House.  Marilynn Eisenberg did a fantastic job narrating during our visit to the museum.  We all found it very interesting, as well as eye-opening.  She is an excellent docent.  If you couldn’t make it then, you should plan a visit.

j0411870The visit to the Ronald McDonald House was very informative.  We must all count our blessings that we have never found the need to be one of the families to take advantage of their facilities for a sick child and their family.  They provided us with a list of needed supplies and food items to stock the pantry they have on hand.  They even have a schoolroom for school-age children receiving treatments and for their siblings as well.

Our next campout will be at North Shore RV Park in Onalaska September 10-13.  Last year our campout there was interrupted

by Hurricane Ike.  This year will, hopefully, be more calm.  Of course, we did have a good time in Georgetown at the Corps of Engineers Park we “evacuated” to as “refugees.”  Notify Bill Frazier as soon as possible at (936) 856-5369 if you plan to be at North Shore.

We have received good news.  The Cool Sams will again have a Sloppy Joe booth at the Canton Samboree in October.  They will be served on Thursday at 11:30 a.m.  In addition, we will be selling “doggy items” to benefit Dogs for the Deaf.  So, at our September campout, come prepared to decorate cuzi’s in dog-themed fabric.  We will also be making wind chimes out of clay pots.  I am sure there will be plenty for the guys to help with.

If you have a nylon jacket with a Cool Sam decal on the back, please don’t put it in the washing machine.  If you must wash it, wash it by hand in cold water.  Those decals don’t last like you would hope they would.  Maybe spot cleaning would work.

Please check your member roster for the expiration date of your Good Sam membership.    Just call me to update or let me know next time you see me.  Thanks.

See you in Onalaska at North Shore RV Park!
